We are on day two of Haute Couture week in Paris, and while many in the world remain confused by such revered, refined fashion and extravagant prices, may we be reminded that it’s not meant for the majority of people, but a select few in the world. I’d be surprised if the total number of true couture clients topped more than a few hundred.

Interestingly enough, even in the midst of news of debt-ridden countries and with global protests against the “one-percent”, an article came out this morning in the Guardian about how couture business is, in fact, on the rise.  And by on the rise, I don’t mean a gentle increase of a few percent. The article details that the house of Armani reported a rise in sales for couture of 50%, while the house of Valentino rose 80%. Even Versace returned to couture this season after an eight year hiatus.

If I had the money, I’d drop six figures on a custom made gown. To be honest, I don’t know that many people, if given the opportunity, who would turn it down. It’s not only the final product that’s beautiful. Like I’ve said before, my affinity for luxury items lies in the process as a whole. From the sourcing of the best materials, to the time, effort and craftsmanship dedicated to a single item. In the case of haute couture gowns, the hours poured into a dress can span weeks and months. The gown is tailor made to fit YOUR body. YOU are invited into the ateliers. Measurements and fittings are painstakingly accurate, plus you get to meet the designer and take sketches home!

A 2007 documentary, The Secret World of Haute Couture, goes into the closets of some well-known couture clients. The awe and passion that these women have for their pieces helps tell why they are willing to pay such exorbitant prices. The lifelong memories produced from the couture process is priceless and just adds to the allure of a custom piece. However, while some people are renowned for their collections, most of the fashion houses are tight-lipped about who their clients are.

The images (c/o Style.com) above are some of the standout pieces I’ve seen thus far. Elie Saab always has some gorgeous creations, perfect for any Hollywood red-carpet event. Alaia and JPG are always great too.
