Many of the Internet’s most popular websites are going dark (or some going white) to protest both SOPA and PIPA, two dangerous pieces of legislation currently trying to be passed in the States.
Look around some of the your favourite blogs, check your social feeds - we all post and re-post items that would come under fire under SOPA and PIPA. These two Acts stipulate that site owners/managers become liable for content posted on their sites; Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc will be forced to monitor and censor all uploaded material. Additionally, under the proposed legislation, if a corporation feels that a particular website is violating copyright laws, it has the ability to seek a court order requiring search engines to remove site links and also tell advertising agencies to remove ads currently running on it and halt payments. Though these Acts are rooted in the States, they would directly impact global business.
A loss of Internet freedom is unacceptable. Allowing governments the ability to block site access would completely change the way we consume information. So, please spread the word, contact local news outlets and let your government representatives know that you do not stand for this!
